We started to chat about this piece. She had been drawn to it because of the Chinese coins I had attached to the piece. But that, interestingly enough, was not where my inspiration started. This piece started with a beaded necklace that I really loved, but never wore. Yes, I took it apart and used the beads on the small wooden box. Building layers of paint, gold leaf, beads and skeleton leaves. I attached the charms, and coins as another dimension. More colour , texture and shape. The final portion was adding the layer of barn board and the tiny metal portrait.
It was the coins, that evoked an emotion in this lady. She told me a story about her family who had come from China. It was such an interesting story. But more importantly, the piece evoked so much emotion in her. After talking for 15 minutes, she was in tears and hugging me. It had touched her heart. And I got to be a part of that emotion. As an artist, you hope that your work speaks to you audience. That it touches their heart. That it is so much more than a " pretty picture".
She left me saying, " oh, you really didn't need to hear all that". But yes I did.
Thank you Beth, I am so glad we met.
